Automation in Potato Please is not a switch. It is a chain of small handoffs, and the chain is only as fast as its slowest handoff. Build it in order and the yard runs itself; build it out of order and you get an expensive museum of idle machines.

The five-stage pipeline

Extraction — get potatoes out of the pile

Hands, then wheelbarrow, then crane. The output of this stage is loose potatoes near the processing line.

Loading — get them into the machine

Sacks, crates and hoppers. This is the stage players skip, and it is the reason their machine idles.

Peeling — remove the skin

The peeling machine for bulk, your hands for spots. Machine output is fast but not clean enough to skip finishing.

Transport — move them to the water

The water channel. Its speed levels are the difference between a stream and a queue. 1.0.2 made the top two levels faster.

Storage — buffer the overflow

Vacuum tank, bucket, wheelbarrow. Storage is not progress; it is insurance against a stall in any other stage.

Three signals your line has stopped

SignalWhat it meansWhere to look
Quota counter frozenNothing is being acceptedPeel quality, then channel inlet
Machine sound continues, counter does notOutput is jammed or being rejectedHopper, outlet, finishing pass
Loudspeaker recounts show a flat pileExtraction has stalledCrane arc, pile arches, autopilot state

Observed behaviour; the game does not label these states.

The most common silent failure is the finishing pass. Machines peel fast and leave spots. If nobody finishes them, the potatoes pile up at the quality check and the counter stops while every machine keeps running. It looks like a bug and is actually a staffing problem.

You are the staffing

A solo automation line has one worker: you. That means your position in the yard is a design decision. Stand where you can see the counter, reach the board and hear the loudspeaker. If you cannot see the counter, you cannot tell whether the line is working.

Late-game checklist

  • Crane arc covers the pile and the hopper.
  • Autopilot on before you leave for a manual task.
  • Sacks or crates staged at the hopper, not in a distant corner.
  • Channel speed high enough that the inlet never queues.
  • A finishing board within arm’s reach of the machine outlet.
  • Vacuum tank emptied before saving if you are on a pre-1.0.2 build.
